Do you love to see wonderful monuments from the ancient Egypt, Napata and Meroe mostly alone, without groups? Do you want to get in connection with other cultures and other people in little villages and little restaurants? Do you prefer to drink tea or coffee or to smoke a waterpipe sitting in front of a coffee-shop? Are you happy to sleep in a tenth in the desert or in the court of a Nubian house under the sky full of stars?"
Then the best what you can do is to travel through the valley of the Nile in the Sudan. In this case the very best way to do this is with Waleed Arafat. I know that because I travelled two times through this wonderful country.
In autumn 2005 we (six persons) arrived with the ferry boat from Assuan in Wadi Halfa. A young man picked us up to bring us out from the chaotic situation during the arrival in a very professional way. From this moment we knew all that we had good luck with this guide. We were right, because after two weeks, when we left Khartoum, we left a very good friend and a beloved country. And I wished to come back.
In March 2009 I came from Ethiopia. And Waleed was also waiting to pick us up. And he handled all the problems on the border also perfect.
But Waleed is not only professional in the organization of the trip. He knows so much about the ancient culture, much more than you will find in the guide-books from Sudan. And he is able to explain that in a clear and interesting way. (And his English is very good!)
But Waleed is not only a very good “guide-book”. He tries to give you the feeling of the spirit of the ancient culture but also to offer you to understand the current situation of the people and their way of life. And this way is a good way!
Waleed is the best “ambassador” for his home-country NUBIA and the valley of the Nile.
One evening sitting in the desert nearby the fire he said: “I love my work, I love to travel with tourists. This work gives me the chance to bring different cultures, different ways of life and different feelings together.” I never heard a sentence like this from another guide!
My second trip (from Ethiopia to Khartoum and back to Wadi Halfa) with some new and many old things was also wonderful. And on the end I was unhappy to leave this amazing country and my “adopted son” Waleed. I hope to get the chance to come back. Inshaallah!
